Rec &Ed Severe Hot Weather Policy

Rec & Ed monitors all heat advisories and weather warnings issued by the National Weather Service. When the heat index is high, we provide frequent water breaks, reduce outdoor activity and/or indoor movement and monitor participants for weather related concerns. If temperatures exceed 100 degrees, additional safety measures are taken. If extreme heat continues and participants have no access to air conditioning, activities may be canceled for that day. We will make every attempt to notify participants in advance of cancellations.

AAPS Board of Education policy requires the cancellation of practices and games when the temperature is over 85 degrees AND the humidity is over 70%.
5.5.4.3 Temperature 85° to 100° F, humidity under 70%: all athletes should be monitored constantly and carefully
5.5.4.4 Temperature 85° to 100° F and higher, humidity over 70%: suspend practice

Rec & Ed activities and classes are cancelled whenever the Ann Arbor Public Schools are closed due to inclement weather.

Rec & Ed activities for youth programs, high school students and adults may be cancelled when the Civil Preparedness office issues a severe weather or tornado WARNING.

When a school building is closed due to power loss or other facility problems, the Rec & Ed activities in that school are cancelled.

For other concerns, call the Rec & Ed Office during regular business hours at 734-994-2300, ext. 0.
